Hengstler Incremental Encoders measure angular position within a single turn. Resolutions are available up to 10,000 per revolution, depending on body size, and the shafts can be solid or hollow. There are solid shaft encoders with shafts from 5mm to 12mm, and hollow shaft shaft encoders with shaft diameters 4mm - 45mm.

Choose between the standard 36mm and 58mm diameter standard body sizes, or from the special versions shown here. All standard products are CE and RoHS compliant and most are UL approved. Each body diameter model is available in many variants, all described in the PDF files. Hengstler also manufacture a range of smaller incremental encoders with lower resolution.

As a general rule each model is available with various flange mountings and with 2 voltage supply options 5VDC or 10-30VDC. Choose the resolution you need from the wide range of pre-sets. A special ATEX version solid shaft incremental encoder is shown in the ATEX pages of this site.

High Temperature Encoders

The standard operating temperature of Hengstler encoders is -10.. +70°C. The Hengstler RI58 solid and hollow shaft encoders and the RI76 are available for high temperature ranges -25.. +100°C. The code letter 'T' appears after the body size code. E.g. RI58-TD. See data sheets of the basic model for this option high temperature version.

Incremental or Absolute?

These Hengstler Incremental encoders measure angular position, and provide facility for the number of turns to be counted using advanced OPTOASIC technology. Out of phase quadrature A & B outputs are generated, plus a separate once per turn N channel. By connecting the A & B outputs into suitable circuitry, direction of movement can be determined based on the phase relationship between the channels. Incremental encoders do not retain position or memory on power down. The N channel can, however, be used as a reference point to return the encoder to a home position when the power is restored The A & B channels can also be used to measure speed

Hengstler absolute encoders also use advanced OPTOASICS but when power is removed retain the absolute position knowledge through design and digital technology. The encoder generates digital words that represents the encoders position, speed and direction. When power is restored the encoder output word will always give the correct mechanical position. It is not necessary to move to a reference point as with incremental type encoders. High resolution combined with high operating speeds is integrated into compact and robust bodies. Hengstler absolute encoders are available for single turn and multi turn and are the only encoder to use when interfacing with Fieldbus systems
