ATEX Encoders

The ATEX directive, known as Directive 94/9/EC supercedes all previous regulations in Europe applying to the use of components and systems where potentially explosive conditions may occur. This relates to the dangers of both dust (grain, tobacco etc) and gas, from causes of ignition such as high temperature, spark and arc. European standards EN 50014 and EN 50018 now apply. Equipment which is to be used in a potentially explosive environment (or which may be associated with the function of the same) has to be certified by an independent body, and labelled for the "level" of safe operation (gas, dust etc) using a code. Rotary Encoders

Because these devices operate electrically they are not intrinsically safe by design and require individual product certification.

Hengstler Rotary Encoders with ATEX Approval

We have one absolute encoder and a selection incremental encoders with ATEX certification. The AX and RX Hengstler encoders are high resolution, high protection class. The other encoders are all incremental suitable for higher operating temperatures specifically designed for rugged duty. You can select from the summary chart shown here.

Please note that the HD, HSD &d DWD encoders have a normal maximum ambient temperature rating of 100°C but the versions with ATEX certification are limited to +80°C. These encoders are branded Hengstler and NorthStar and are often used in harsh environments such as oil and gas, chemical, paper and steel.

ATEX Certification

The Hengstler RX70/71 and AX70/71 ATEX Certification is as shown here.

A typical certification code will define a device group, a category, a definition of suitability for gases or dusts, a geographical specification code, an explosion proof category, a gas group where applicable, a temperature code and possibly an IP rating.

It is the ultimate responsibility of all systems builders to ensure that the total package / assembly / system complies with Directive 94/9/C as may be applicable. If in doubt please contact us directly with details of your application and the products you are considering using.
